An Invitation to Partner

Rosemary Bekker President, Willoughby Friends of Ossu

Friends of Ossu is a local (Willoughby-based) community friendship group supporting the people of Ossu – a small village in impoverished Timor-Leste. As a founding member of Friends of Ossu, I am pleased and proud of the support we have provided over the past decade. We have supported education, health and environmental programs which are detailed on our website www.friendsofossu.org.au.

Our latest project – a water sanitation and health (WaSH) project – comes at the behest of the village leaders in Ossu – they are in desperate need of a clean and reliable water supply.

Project partners WaterAid

This is a major project and Friends of Ossu, in alliance with WaterAid, has fully assessed the needs and costed the project. We have commenced Stage 1 to bring water from one of the supply points and now seek financial support for Stages 2 & 3 – connecting more water sources to schools and the clinic in Ossu. More information on our friendship group, on Timor-Leste and Ossu, and on the WaSH project is attached to this communication.

800 kilometres in 40 Days Luke keighery

We are asking you and your business to assist by way of sponsorship – to give water to the Ossu community. To this end, one of our members – Luke Keighery – is walking 800km on the Camino trail in Spain in September/October. Luke is paying his own costs – a significant contribution – so we are looking to leverage this contribution by a factor of 10-20 times to raise $100,000.

We ask you to partner us in providing water to Ossu by becoming a Corporate Sponsor. You can become a sponsor at the following levels:

➢ High Water Sponsor (Platinum)

$30,000

➢ Pipe Water Sponsor (Gold)

$15,000

➢ Tap Water Sponsor (Silver)

$7,500

➢ Corporate Supporter

$2,000 – $7,499

Read the full details including features and benefits here.

All sponsorship monies are deposited with WaterAid Australia, a Deductible Gift Recipient.

We look forward to having you sign up as a Corporate Sponsor. Please contact either myself on 0410 545 585 or Luke on 0424 188 139 to sponsor or to discuss further.

Yours faithfully

Rosemary Bekker

Greater Sydney Landcare
We are thrilled to announce that Creating Canopies We are thrilled to announce that Creating Canopies has secured funding from the NSW Government to plant 200,000 trees across Greater Sydney over the next 3 years! This is a huge step towards creating a greener and cooler city, improving air quality, and creating habitat for our native wildlife.

We kicked off our first planting event to celebrate our new Creating Canopies project with a very hot but rewarding planting day at the beautiful Nurragingy Reserve in Western Sydney. Staff from @blacktowncitycouncil helped us get a whopping 1,500 trees and shrubs planted at the brand new Wawai Ngurra inclusive adventure playspace. All the plants were given a good watering in and will continue to be looked after in the coming weeks.

We can't wait to put on more events and we hope you'll join us in making Sydney a better place to live, work, and play. Stay tuned for updates on how you can get involved!

@landcare_NSW and Greater Sydney Landcare are planting 200,000 trees as part of the Sydney Canopies Project to help reduce temperature and mitigate urban heat by increasing tree canopy and green cover across Greater Sydney. Proudly funded by the NSW Government.

The Creating Canopies team added 1,600 native plan The Creating Canopies team added 1,600 native plants to Camden Park on the outskirts of Southwest Sydney in November 2021. Just a year later, there is now a thick understory of local flora.

Different vegetation types attract different species. The open parklands with tall trees and no understorey suits predator birds and more aggressive species. Understorey vegetation is really important for lots of smaller bird species who need to hide from predators or build nests in the bushy shrubs.

Do you have a fabulous Landcare or Bushcare story Do you have a fabulous Landcare or Bushcare story you wish to share with the wider community? They could be stories that celebrate achievements, stories that invite more Landcarers into our groups, a call to action, anything that you feel compelled to share more widely. Back in October and December in 2020 the Creating Back in October and December in 2020 the Creating Canopies team planted 1,300 native trees at Fairfield Hospital, turning the bare grass into a small forest. Now two years on, just look at how they are thriving. Some of the trees are well over 2 meters high! Visitors to the hospital can now enjoy a greener, more relaxing visit while the native wildlife have gained more habitat to explore.

Stay tuned for some new planting opportunities you can get involved in!

Season's Greetings from Greater Sydney Landcare! 🌲
Chauvel Park, on the banks of the Georges River in Chauvel Park, on the banks of the Georges River in Sydney’s South West, got a big boost in December 2021 when we converted large areas of grass into native habitat. We managed to plant 950 plants as part of the Creating Canopies project.

One year on and just look at the difference! Flowering native bushes and tall trees are now well on their way to cooling down the area and offering habitat to the local wildlife.

We planted 500 native mid and under-story species for Archer Park, in Parramatta. These plants will provide some lovely habitat and food for the birds and pollinators of the area. It was a big turnout with 30 participants from ADAPT lending their time and energy to help us with the plantings. We were rewarded with one of the first really warm and sunny days coming into Summer, and plenty of sandwiches and biscuits to keep up our energy.

On Tuesday 6 December we held the last Creating Ca On Tuesday 6 December we held the last Creating Canopies planting day for the year at Kyeemagh Community Hub. With the help of @baysidensw , @fixitsistersshed and local community members, we planted over 600 coastal heath and Critically Endangered Eastern Suburb's Banksia Scrub species. Most of these plants were grown locally by IndigiGrow .

The Fix It Sisters - a group that empowers women of all ages with practical and creative skills - provided a great morning tea and tour of their facility where they are busy making native bee boxes, fairy penguin habitat and floating habitat rafts!

These planting days are really embraced by the volunteer community and Bayside Council used the opportunity to announce a new bushcare group which the Fix It Sister's will host and many of the volunteers signed up for.

The Kyeemagh site is at the mouth of the Cooks River and continues the long term commitment of Mud Crabs and the Cooks River Alliance's to clean up the river.

It’s always inspiring to compare photos of our C It’s always inspiring to compare photos of our Creating Canopies sites before we planted, with ones several months down the line.

Check out these before and after photos at Mt Druitt Hospital that were taken one year apart. The recent photos show flowering callistemons and shrubs such as one of our favourites, Ozothamnus diosmifolius and look at the change from bare grass to bushy understorey! Can’t wait to see what another one year's worth of growth will look like!

Have you ever been to Nurrangingy Reserve? It’s an amazing place in Western Sydney that contains the Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens, Aboriginal Heritage Garden and a Miniature Railway. Plus now it has plenty of new plants to admire!

Local scouts, high school students, Friends of Toongabbie Creek and Oakes Road Bushcare were joined by local volunteers from the community including Councillor Kellie Darley. Baxter Healthcare generously provided access to water so these plants were able to get a good initial drink.

Thanks to everyone who came along!
